Born from real-world practice

The idea for DocToRead does not come from a tech lab, but directly from everyday hospital life:

Bastian Hollmann, founder and former employee at University Hospital Münster, experienced over many years how communication breaks down due to language barriers, time pressure, and complexity – with serious consequences for treatment and trust.

He knows typical communication barriers first-hand:

  • A doctor with a migration background may lack certain words.
  • A patient comes from a different linguistic and cultural background and has limited language skills.
  • Medical jargon is incomprehensible to laypersons. Patients and relatives understand different amounts, which leads to uncertainty.

With DocToRead, all of this becomes easier – and safer.

Why not use OpenAI or public chatbots?

Public AI systems are entirely unsuitable for clinical environments. Healthcare requires legally reliable communication (data security), medically consistent and predictable results, and safe integration into hospital workflows.

Unlike generic AI tools, DocToRead was specifically developed for medical communication. As a result, the architecture had to be designed completely differently. DocToRead is not a black box, neither technically nor legally. Rather, it is a strictly regulated, transparent assistance system with a clear division of responsibility between humans and machines.
